Gambas Genie is a free software real time strategy game engine being written for the Free Empires project. While the Stratagus engine is designed to be like Warcraft II and is no longer actively developed outside of BOS Wars, Gambas Genie (abbreviated as GG) is being made to be smiler to the Ensemble Studios Genie Engine that was used in Age of Empires and Age of Empires II. It is also going to be modified to be more like Zoo Tycoon and Sim-City for LinFarm. It is being written in Gambas and as such requires the Gambas run-time environment to run. Most of the Gambas Genie code has been written by Graham L. Wilson however it is being developed comparatively openly, with Source Release development builds being sent out to the development community, and add ons and upgrades can be added by anyone. Currently it is most recently available in the form of of the first Source Release of Lamp Refugee.

Version 0.2

As showcased in Free Empires: Chiefs and Warriors Source Release 2.0, expanding the objects and features it can support.

Released on: November 9, 2007 (supposed to be on October 26, 2007).

Version 0.3

This is the upcoming version that is to be showcased in Free Empires: Chiefs and Warriors Source Release 3.0, and is to be rewritten from scratch to provide a more "stable" game engine. It is going to support true object rendering, module levels, and texturing; some features from 0.2 may not be present in 0.3 but they will all be present in 0.4 (as well as many more). For many months all that was released about its development was vague statements on the Piga Software Forum. However, in early August 2008 news about great advancements towards the major goals was released as well as a new development shot showing an alignment of Villagers in the form of "FE! Piga". A later development shot showcased texturing. That year also marked the launched of the Gambas Genie project web page. On October 26, 2009 a large technical release called Lamp Refugee which shows how advancement towards the new version is coming. Information about the new release has been added to the Free Empires website and GG project page.

Tech Demos

Gambas Genie tech demos were used to experiment with features outside of the main project. One tech demo was released, which showed how units will work and react in SR 3.0. Another tech demo was being created showing resource management and another technological research. One started in December 2008 was creating basic attack controls and enemy artificial intelligence. All of these features should be merged on top of the new object rendering and texture system in SR 3.0. A new merged and greatly expanded technical demo, based on the older ones but largely new code, called Lamp Refugee was released on October 26, 2009.

Gambas Genie Games

Free Empires is a project to recreate Age of Empires for GNU/Linux.

Lamp Refugee is a technical demo to experiment with the engine and is taking the form of a fantasy strategy game.

Linfarm is being made in the style of Zoo Tycoon and Sim-City. You control a farm and attempt to gain a profit.
